what if you could look at the newspaper
as if you were looking at the forest or ocean,
The Stock Ecology project visualizes the stock market as a forest changing its featureswith the weather and season. By providing invisible and abstract information with a visible form, people can access to information in a more intuitive and familiar way. The system makes use of fractal shapes whose shape is determined dynamically by a few parameters to highlight the factors of complex information that people want to concentrate on.
Motivation
When I first came across this idea of visualizing stock market as a changing forest, I was 10 years old. I was always curious about my father's work and used to ask him what he was looking at. Then he would always say " This is the Stock market, which is something like a farm you cultivate. The crops I raise grow very well when sun comes out, but are sometimes ruined by storms or long rain." The Stock Ecology projects is a realization of these old nostalgic talks I had with my father.
System Design
"Stock Ecology" accesses the information of stock prices of the corporation the user is investing in, as well as recent movement in the stock market. The followings are factors of each corporation used as parameters to render the fractal shape.
- Average volume traded
- Daily changes of Stock Price
- Market Cap
- Changes in Dow
Stock Ecology in Use
The user can be intuitively aware of how well their crops (corporations in which they invest) are growing, and quickly assess the changing economic situation. By setting the Stock Ecology program as a desktop image, children (like myself 10 years ago) can understand why their parents look desperate sometimes.
